From a story, I’ve heard to a reality I’ve seen. social and cultural etiology of violence against women in Jordan is real, and people tend not to feel comfortable talking about or bringing it up because it is simply an uncomfortable subject that no one wants to address. I think it is about time we have those conversations, it is time to step up and try to find solutions. Victims of violence-against-women who continue to stay in their violent relationships fear losing face, financial security, children, love, and respect which makes it an issue. Growing up in Jordan, I have heard numerous stories about all forms of violence and abuse against women, but I have never seen it. This is due to the fact that it is domestic, and no one sees it other than the household who will not speak up or tell anyone. I knew it existed, but it hit differently when I saw it in front of my eyes while being at my best friend’s house. When demanded that I leave all of a sudden by a male family member, I felt suspicious. Walking out the front door and closing the door, I heard my friend’s cries. She was being abused. I could still remember her cries like it was yesterday. When I asked her about her bruises the next day, she refused to acknowledge it l, and stated it was “normal”. This was the breaking point for me. I have educated her about what is right. when it isn’t stopped, I had the courage to speak with her abuser and told them to stop, or else i would take legal actions towards the situation, and that is when it stops. I realized this was only a single case out of thousands of abused women who go through this thinking it is normal. And I want to fix this. I am currently studying public health, and willing to conduct research on this issue and how it mentally impacts women in Jordan in the feature. I am also willing to open my own non-profit educational and help center in Jordan in the feature to help assist women to deal with those situations privately. I want women to be educated about their rights and be respected.
