Dreamers’ Voices: Tobitate! Study Abroad Initiative Mentoring Session

Tobitate! The Study Abroad Initiative is a program that sends Japanese young people to countries around the world to study abroad. This time, students who returned to Japan from their study-abroad had a mentoring session with the Dreamers of the WORLD DREAM PROJECT. The following is a report on what the Dreamers who were in charge of mentoring felt and learned.

In a world where opportunities shape destinies, the Tobitate Study Abroad Initiative Japan stands as a beacon of hope and transformation. This post-study abroad program for Japanese youth is not just a mere opportunity; it is a testament to the power of providing young minds with the chance to seize transformative experiences. Through their encounters with diverse perspectives, they come to understand the significance of diverse cultures and the invaluable lessons that local experiences offer.

The impact of this program is evident in the remarkable growth of these students. Prior to their departure, they are filled with youthful enthusiasm and aspirations. Upon their return, however, it is essential for them to reassess their dreams and create an action plan, enriched by the knowledge and experience they gained abroad. As a mentor, I help guide them with reflective questions, encouraging them to realize that their dreams have not changed —rather, they have become more tangible and actionable. This shift allows them to develop clear, practical plans to achieve their goals. Fueled by newfound curiosity, they aspire to pursue meaningful careers that reflect their passions and ambitions, addressing critical issues such as consumerism, global poverty, and environmental conservation,…

It is an honor to engage with these exceptional young individuals, to empower them, and to witness their growing understanding of the profound impact education can have. Their motivation to create positive change in the world is truly inspiring. This experience serves as a powerful reminder of why initiatives like Tobitate are so vital—not only do they open doors, but they ignite a lasting passion to build a brighter future for everyone.

I am grateful for the chance to play a role in their journey and eagerly anticipate the incredible contributions they will make in the world.

Today I had the opportunity to talk with fellow Tobitate students. I am delighted to talk to Haruka, Pacchi, Saki, and Sachi who have just returned to Japan. Their experiences vary from their academic experience on campus, work experience, and even learning new languages and new cultures. Take Pacchi-san, who had the experience of working closely with a fashion designer in the UK, Midori-san who has been actively engaged with various international organizations and global forums, Haruka-san who discovered her newfound passion in interfaith dialogues during her work in UAE, Saki-san who developed a social enterprise to empower local communities in Philippines, or Sachi-san who got to learn Arabic and Moroccan Arabic languages during her Tobitate experience. All of them shared a brave yet optimistic view on life, shaped by their passion and diverse experiences. I have met some of them prior to their departure for the Tobitate program, and I cannot describe how much growth they have had since the last time I talked to them. All of the Tobitate students boldly grow both personally and professionally, and I could not be more proud to be a part of their personal journeys in achieving their dreams.

Personal Growth Through Adversity

As a Dreamer who has had the privilege of listening to students reflect on their study abroad experiences, I am continually inspired by their journeys. Each story shared by the students brings to light the profound impact of stepping outside one’s comfort zone and embracing the world.

Being a mentor in the “Tobitate” program has been one of the most enriching experiences of my life. My role is not just to guide or advise but to listen actively and supportively. Each presentation I attend reveals not only the growth of the students but also the transformative power of their experiences abroad. It is a reminder of the importance of mentorship in nurturing the aspirations of young dreamers.

From my personal perspective, my tips to them:

  • Embrace Discomfort: Stepping into a new culture can be challenging, but discomfort is a sign of growth.
  • Stay Open-Minded: Engage with locals and be curious about their way of life.
  • Build Connections: Form relationships with fellow students and mentors for support and collaboration.
  • Reflect Regularly: Take time to journal and process your experiences.
  • Don’t Fear Failure: View setbacks as learning opportunities that will help you adapt.
  • Balance Work and Play: Enjoy the cultural experiences while focusing on your studies.

Hearing students articulate their challenges and triumphs is incredibly moving. Each story is unique, yet they all resonate with themes of courage, resilience, and discovery. The students often speak about moments of doubt and fear, but what stands out is their determination to overcome these obstacles. As a mentor, I am reminded of the strength that lies within each individual when they pursue their dreams.

The exchange between Dreamers and students is a two-way street. While I offer my insights and experiences, I am equally enriched by their perspectives. Their fresh outlook on life and education challenges me to rethink my own views and encourages me to embrace change. This reciprocal relationship fosters an environment of mutual growth.

One of the highlights of the sessions is witnessing the students reflect on their journeys. They discuss not only what they learned academically but also how their experiences reshaped their identities. This self-reflection is crucial; it helps them recognize their strengths and areas for growth. As a mentor, it is gratifying to see them evolve and gain clarity about their future paths.

Being part of this program creates a sense of community among Dreamers and students. We share a common goal: to inspire and support one another in our aspirations. This camaraderie is invaluable, as it highlights the importance of collaboration and shared experiences in achieving our dreams.

As I continue my journey as a mentor, I carry with me the lessons learned from each scholar. Their stories serve as a reminder that every experience, whether positive or challenging, contributes to our growth. I am committed to nurturing the next generation of dreamers, encouraging them to take bold steps toward their futures.

In conclusion, being a mentor in the “Tobitate” program is a treasure that enriches my life. It is a reminder of the beauty of connection, the power of stories, and the importance of supporting one another in our journeys. Together, we can inspire and uplift each other, creating a brighter future for all.
