My dream is to tie the world together to create sustainable solutions for our climate crisis. It is easy to get stuck in your own comfortable bubble, to close the door between you and all problems constantly circling around the world. Instead of facing the reality of our bleeding environment, we like to tuck ourselves in and enjoy our comfy bed, however, that is no longer an option because that bed, is burning. Understanding climate change became a big interest of mine during my time at the university it also made me realise how unfair the effects are. I traveled to Mozambique to interview local young people about their experiences of climate change and their spirits of hope and enthusiasm enlighten but also made me disappointed in my own society. How can these people which are so vulnerable against climate change but yet have not had a big contribution to the issue be that hopeful and responsible when my own society just want to hide from the problem?
I want to highlight three lessons learned from my meeting with the young people in Mozambique. First is that all contributions matter even if it is just to take care of your own waste. Second thing is that everybody can grow and it is important to have discussions and educate even though it might feel uncomfortable. The third thing I learned was most important, we cannot give up and the solution is to work together. While sitting in the hot room face to face with the future of Mozambique who spoke with such energy and beliefs I understood that I, as the future of Sweden needed to join hands with them. We can no longer hide under sheet of ignorance, glad that the effects of our actions happens thousands of miles away. There is no time left to hope for other countries to change their behavior it is time for us to together be a solution. Just like this meeting opened my eyes I want to do the same for other people in my community. By offering a safe space where they can meet with people from other parts of the world to realise that climate change is for real. We need to give a bit of “inter” to the “action” if we want to see the change we need.
