For many of us, growing up is not easy. It is even more difficult if you were born and raised in one of the least developed countries, like Cambodia, which was torn apart by genocide and decade-long civil wars. When I was young, shelter, food, education, and other basic needs were a true privilege. However, dreaming was among the few things that I could afford—so I dreamed. I have many dreams, but my lifelong dream is to create a world where young people are inspired and empowered to lead.
I believe that to lead, inspire, and empower others, we must start with ourselves, and there is no better tool than education. Although it was difficult for me to pursue a quality education due to financial hardship and lack of guidance, through hard work and perseverance, I received my first scholarship abroad at age 17. This significantly changed the trajectory of my life. Since then, I have received many opportunities to study, work, and travel to over 60 countries. I feel grateful and forever in debt to those who have helped me along the way, so it is vital for me to pay it forward by making a positive difference to the people and communities I meet. From serving as a student leader to volunteering as an English teacher at the Red Cross refugee center in Malta, I have tried my best to give back and serve those in need.
After finishing my college in the US and returning to Cambodia, I started my career as a government official at age 24, since fulfilling my childhood dreams has remained my priority. My professional work has allowed me to utilize my knowledge to shape Cambodia’s economic and trade-related policies, which would ultimately enhance our people’s standard of living and contribute to the growth and development of our country. I have also been teaching at a local university with the hope of sharing my experiences with younger generations. I encourage them to always pay it forward by helping their fellow youths, especially those whose voices are hardly heard and dreams are rarely realized.
My dreams are far from over. I truly believe that the ideal world where young people can flourish at their maximum potential is a world led by young people themselves. So, it is important that you, the young people, continue to learn, grow, serve, and persevere despite the adversity that you may face throughout your lives. And always remember: you are never too young to lead.
