Body image has become one of the most controversial topics in this world. Why? In this new generation, social media platforms have contributed largely to what the world perceives to be the “perfect body.” Many women feel like black sheep due to the standardized body image that has been created by society. They have difficulties accepting themselves.
Body image has given rise to mental health issues like depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and more. Research by Oxford University Press has shown that girls and women report dissatisfaction with weight and appearance more often than boys and men. This is likely linked to increased suicidal cases around the world.
In Botswana, it has been a cultural norm that thicker women are more preferable. Growing up as a slim female surrounded by my well-defined agemates was difficult; I always felt the need to eat more to gain weight. I fell into an eating disorder, where I struggled to eat healthily. My mom was my biggest support during that time. She encouraged me to eat what was enough for me, and after years of development, I have learned to accept myself for who I am, confident in my skin.
A person should love themselves for who they are. I am currently working on the establishment of an organization called Blissful Flaws to compact the issues of body image in women and girls. It will be aimed at helping females realize that their bodies are perfect the way they are and that they don’t have to change themselves. I would like to reach out to females of various body types through social media platforms to let them know how beautiful they are. Furthermore, I want to campaign and spread awareness, interview females of different backgrounds to hear their stories, and work with beauty companies on body image projects.
I believe in two magic words: accept and appreciate. We women must learn how to accept our bodies first and appreciate the beauty of it. Confidence and happiness are some of the most important features of well-being. It all starts from within—self-acceptance. I want to continue to spread the importance of loving ourselves as we are.
