Taking Flight Toward Our Future

This time I would like to report on the “Tobitate” Post-departure Study Abroad Session held on September 7 in Osaka.

Although I knew about “Tobitate! Study Abroad JAPAN,” this was my first opportunity to interact with Tobitate scholars in person. I had the privilege of supporting the event as a mentor at the Osaka venue, and I was struck by the sheer energy of the atmosphere. It was an incredibly meaningful experience for me as well.

“Tobitate! Study Abroad JAPAN” is a program that supports young people from Japan in stepping out into the world, gaining valuable experiences through study abroad, and working toward their research themes and dreams. This follow-up seminar provided an opportunity for Tobitate scholars to reflect on their study-abroad experiences, share their growth, and consider their next steps.

About Tobitate! (Leap for Tomorrow) Study Abroad Initiative

Each Tobitate scholar was like a main character in a movie as they presented the challenges they had discovered through their study abroad experience and their visions for the future. The venue was full of energy, with each scholar passionately sharing their stories and thoughts with the Dreamers. Time was set aside to report on the results of the research themes established in the pre-departure session. These scholars didn’t just improve their language skills while abroad—they tackled research topics on issues like gender, sustainability, conflict, and racial discrimination. They reported the results of their work and actively asked Dreamer’s opinion on the questions they had prepared, striking a balance between assertiveness and listening.

During their presentations, many of the Tobitate scholars spoke with smiles on their faces, but when receiving feedback from the Dreamers, their expressions turned serious as they thoughtfully considered how to apply their experiences to the next stage of their journeys. One particularly memorable piece of advice from the Dreamers to the scholars was, “Stay optimistic, but be cautious.” The Tobitate scholars are challenging themselves in a variety of fields, often facing significant challenges and navigating uncharted risks. The “stay optimistic” part of the message emphasized the importance of believing in one’s abilities, maintaining a positive attitude, and continuously striving forward with confidence. At the same time, the “but be cautious” reminder highlighted the need to stay strategic, plan, and maintain a realistic perspective when working toward their goals.

I was deeply inspired by this follow-up seminar. Witnessing each Tobitate scholar take bold steps toward their dreams prompted me to reflect on my sense of purpose and future direction. In particular, I was reminded of the importance of recognizing the gap between ideals and reality, and how crucial it is to leverage one’s strengths to shape the future. As I continue to watch these scholars make some impacts in the world, I also renewed my determination to move forward and take flight toward a better future, together with them.
