Since I was little I was interested in taking care of the environment and taking actions to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.
I remember that I accompanied my parents to medical days in various areas of the country offering medical attention and medicines to low-income people, I was able to learn more about other people’s lives. This is how I started working on environmental education projects for children, youth and adults, teaching them to live in a sustainable way where they take care of the environment and take advantage of its resources.
Guatemala is one of the most vulnerable countries to the effects of climate change due to many factors. its geographical location, its economic situation, among others. However, there is a lot of environmental work that children and youth are doing.
When I was 10 years old I had the opportunity to travel and represent my country at the Tunza International Conference in Korea, where children around the world were able to present our community projects, I presented my environmental work in Guatemala and I learned more about climate issues and actions around the world. I have had participated in other international conferences and forums, training me and making the world known about the environmental work we the young people have done in my country.
Together with Tropical Rainforest Foundation and other organizations, we organized massive plantings in all over the country providing environmental education to young and old people in neighborhoods, schools, colleges and companies. With small acts we are changing our future, for a cleaner air and more sustainable communities.
On May 2019 I was selected to be part in the Vital Voices Program “Voices that inspire” and I received support to develop my most recent project “Leaders for the Environment” in which we create environmental leaders by educating children and youth on the current climate crisis, (causes and effects at local and global level), we also promote environmental awareness regarding our responsibility as inhabitants of this planet in the search for solutions, we motivate and empower them to create projects that benefit environment and develop viable strategies for their communities.
My dream is that all children and youth have the opportunity to create their own environmental projects, develop that leadership that everyone has and change their communities with small actions. Because we all have amazing ideas and so much potential! We just have to start!
