An Economy based on Primary Ecosystem Services

In 2020, I had a deep understanding of the interconnectedness between humans and the planet, realizing that the current economic order was threatening the very systems that sustained life on Earth. Fueled by this knowledge, I set out on a mission to create a new vision for responsible human behavior.

The combustion of fossil fuels compromises Oxygen as a “free rider,” benefiting from the use of the Global Commons without fully internalizing the costs. The consequences were dire: climate change driven by carbon dioxide, a reduction in atmospheric oxygen, the loss of access to safe drinking water, and a decline in both biomass and biodiversity. The Global Commons, which provided us with the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the food we eat, was at risk of collapse.

I also recognized the importance of promoting the growth of biomass as a means to sequester atmospheric carbon, a crucial step in combating climate change. By valuing and increasing biomass, we could contribute to maintaining cooler ambient temperatures, which would be vital for future agriculture in a warming climate. The creation of advanced agricultural landscapes that used biological ambient cooling could mitigate heat stress and ensure agricultural security.

Properly planted and maintained trees provided Primary Ecosystem Services (PES) that were vital for the qualitative aspects of the biosphere. I envisioned a new standard for responsible consumption that acknowledged the immense value of forest systems.
Driven by this vision, I proposed an economic system based on a Bio-Currency derived from Primary Ecosystem Services. This innovative system would measure and record the production of contracted PES, including oxygen, and clean water, all generated through photosynthesis. Over time, these products would protect the health and sustainability of natural ecosystems across terrestrial landscapes.

With determination, I embarked on a journey to rally governments, financial institutions, and communities around this new economic order. It was a vision that sought to transform humanity’s relationship with nature, ensuring the growth of living biomass and positively correlating with the quality of life and diversity on Earth.

The vision of responsible human behavior appreciating the Primary Ecosystem Services, spread far and wide, inspiring people from all walks of life. Together, they embraced the power of a Bio-Currency and committed to nurturing the Global Commons. As they moved forward, they built a sustainable world, where the harmony between humans and the environment thrived, creating a legacy for generations to come.
