Climate change is becoming an increasing issue worldwide, with natural disasters, rising sea levels, declining species, droughts, and floods becoming more frequent. I often wondered what I could do to help.
At the age of 20, I began volunteering for environmental organizations in Copenhagen, where I worked with other young people to raise awareness about environmental issues. That’s when I began to wonder that perhaps we can achieve more when working with like-minded people. I spent the next summer at a local organization in Iceland, where I learned that every person possesses a unique set of skills.
My grandfather would be the perfect example. He worked in agriculture all of his life, and although his reading and writing are not strong, he can build anything you can imagine. Like him, each individual has their own set of abilities, regardless of age or education.
When diverse skills come together to create a better world for future generations, real change can happen. My dream is that everyone realizes that they are capable, too. I am getting my master’s degree in environmental humanities, and I hope to inspire others to make better personal and societal choices by deepening my own knowledge of English and sustainability.
Climate change will be one of humanity’s biggest challenges. We must also involve all animals, plants, and living things to find the answers. We need to create an environment where each of us has a voice and can contribute equally to education and the workplace. When solving the world’s problems, age and educational background do not matter. Children and adults should teach each other how to think together, share their abilities and ideas, and solve problems. I believe in the power of collaborative action and that we can create a better future by working together.
